Lucy's Memory Page
Where it all began...
Over eleven years ago now.... Sounds like the start of a fairy tale, and I guess you could call Lucy's story a bit of one. On October 27, 2006, that book came to a close. After many days and weeks of being sick, her fantastic story came to a close, and she will always be loved and missed
How it started:
It was a year to the day of when my family had our Lab, Misty, sent to Rainbow Bridge due to age. It must have been fate. We get to the farm and I actually have to crawl into the puppy box to get her out, (A trait that I would never recommend in a puppy that you are choosing!), but it all worked out in the end. My first experience in border collies and my first experience in training dogs, so Lucy had the cards stacked against her. And it was no fault of hers!
Stuff to do!
While Lucy enjoyed obedience and herding of course, Agility was her true love. While we had a rocky start, due to my lack of skill, not hers, it is something that she excelled in. While never that fastest dog out there, she was quite accurate. Honestly, I could have given her the course copy, and she could have done it herself. When she retired shortly after her 8th birthday, we had achieved 23 titles to her name. More than I could have ever dreamed for for my first dog!
Lucy had just turned 8, and had been showing at an agility trial just a couple weeks prior. Suddenly, she was uncomfortable and having problems moving. We go the the vet and she has three calcified disks in her back. Retirement is a must, but my vet feels that it can be fixed with medication. Unfortunatly, that is not the case. In exactly one week, she is paralized in the rear. We go to a specialist, and we have 2 options.... Surgury or being put to sleep. Of couse there was only one option.... She turned out to be the miracle dog, walking just 1 1/2 days after surgury, and then having a full recovery. That surgery bought me another almost three years of time with her, and I would do it again in a second. The pain has ended, you are at peace at last, I love you my sweet lady...
